OUR
TEAM:
The Project Team: There are
four Team Members that typically are required to plan and build a new home or
renovate an existing. There are several other members that can help the Team
with their specialized knowledge of specific parts of the process. Depending on
the scope, budget, and timing for your particular project they may not be
necessary or can be brought in at a later time. The four Team Members are as
follows:
The
Homeowner/ Client: We recognize the Homeowner plain and simple is the
Client and without the Client there is no project. The Client is responsible for
the vision of the project and its direction by approving each Design Phase as
well as funding the project as it moves along. It is the Client who must be
educated and comfortable with the end result.
The
Designer: The Designers task is to translate the Clients needs and
desires while balancing the specific faults and virtues of the particular site
and weigh all factors against the project budget. Using the Designers tools of
drawings and details the Designer brings to “Life” the Clients Dream Home into a
functional plan that is then used by all the remaining team members in building
the final project.
The
Structural Engineer: The engineer works closely with the Designer to
find the most efficient method to construct the project. The engineer calculates
all the loads and their affects on the structure such as, wind, rain, and the
weight of the structure itself and then designs the frame and foundation to
support those loads. He will discuss with the other team members the advantages
and costs of different materials so the best decision will be
made.
The
Builder/Contractor: The Builder/Contractor is the team member who
coordinates all the craftspeople and their materials into the final project of
the entire team’s vision, resulting in the completed home.
Other Consultants:
Interior Designer: An Interior Designer assists in
selecting and coordinating the final touches. The right doors, windows colors,
textures, lighting, flooring, cabinets, moldings, hardware, and furnishings are
important to create the overall style and flow of your personal oasis. An
Interior Designer may assist in the interior space planning and function of
specific rooms as well as the selection of interior finishes.
Kitchen Planner: A Kitchen Planner assists the Designer
in creating a functional, organized kitchen, arranged to work for
you.
Landscaper Designer: The Landscape Designer is the
person involved in the planning, design and overview of the exterior environment
for your home; including pools, outdoor lighting, plants and irrigation,
etc.
Civil Engineer: Depending on the scope and size of the
project, a Civil Engineer may be required to design the water distribution
systems and drainage for the property.
MEP
Engineer: In some cases an MEP Engineer is required to design the
Mechanical (HVAC), Electrical and Plumbing systems for the project. This
includes designing the heating ventilation and A/C system, the plumbing and rain
gutter systems, the power distribution, the lighting system, the
telecommunication system, and control system. As the Designer, we locate all of
these systems and as long as licensed contractors install these systems, an MEP
Engineer is not required for a single family home, however due to unique
conditions, you may wish to discuss this option.
Preston
Wood & Associates Design Process,
A Note to the
Homeowner...Our Client
The
designing of a new home or the remodeling of an existing home requires the
gathering of information and the making of many decisions to insure that the
home not only meets your design expectations, but is structurally sound and
within your budget. Even if you have designed or built a home in the past or if
this is your first venture the task may seem overwhelming. Typically, the design
involves more than one person because often times a couple or family will be
moving into the home so there will be multiple visions for the home. All clients
have budgets as it is rare that money is of no object; even for the very wealthy
I have found that there is a budget. The point being there are many items
that must be considered and documented before a design concept becomes a home.
Over the years, I have found that the experience of designing someone’s home can
be a very rewarding experience if there is trust established between the Client
and the Designer. To achieve this goal we know it is imperative that the Client
know during the Design Process what input will be needed and when, and that the
Client understand what drawings and information they will receive from us and
when. We created this brochure with not only words but with the use of drawings,
examples, and illustrations in hopes that the visual along with the written will
make the process easier to understand. Our Process is in Phases and includes a
timeline for each Phase. At the back of the brochure is a Glossary of Terms
for both design and construction. this brochure should become your Design
Bible until it is replaced with your completed “Home
Plans”.
“At the end of
the Design Process, our gift to you, should be a house you are happy to call
Home.”
